RCD Testing & Thermal Imaging in Melbourne

Scheduled RCD testing, thermographic switchboard scanning and solar testing for commercial, strata and build-to-rent buildings, delivered with the records that prove every device was tested and every fault was found early.

RCD testing is a compliance obligation, not a precaution

A residual current device is the piece of equipment that stands between an electrical fault and a person. In a workplace or a shared building, testing them is not optional good practice: safe-to-operate duties under Victorian OHS law are met by testing safety switches on a defined cycle, and AS/NZS 3760 sets out how and how often. An RCD that has never been trip-tested is a device nobody can vouch for.

We test both ways the standard requires: the push-button function test on its short cycle, and the timed trip test that measures whether the device actually disconnects within its rated milliseconds. Results are recorded per device, per board, per building, so the question "when were these last tested" always has a documented answer. This is the same testing discipline we run at scale across our build-to-rent maintenance programs.

Thermal imaging finds the fault before the outage

Loose terminations, overloaded circuits and failing connections all share one tell: they run hot long before they fail. A thermographic scan of a live switchboard shows those hot spots without shutting anything down, which is why it belongs on a maintenance calendar rather than in a post-incident report.

We scan boards under normal load, flag anomalies against reference temperatures, and pair every finding with a repair recommendation. On buildings we maintain, the scan feeds straight into the works program, so a hot joint found in March is a repair completed in March, not a fire investigation in September. It is the preventative core of our switchboard maintenance service.

Solar and whole-system verification

Buildings with rooftop solar carry testing obligations their owners rarely see listed anywhere: isolators, inverters and the DC side all need periodic inspection and testing. We fold solar testing into the same visit as RCD and switchboard work, one schedule and one report, which is how we deliver apartment-level compliance across hundreds of dwellings in a single program.

Records your auditors ask for

Every test we run produces an entry in a register: device, location, result, date, next due. When an Owners Corporation audit, an insurer or an Essential Safety Measures report needs evidence, the register is the answer, already formatted and already current. Testing without records is money spent proving nothing.

Who we test for

Our testing programs run across Owners Corporations and strata buildings, build-to-rent towers, offices, and retail centres, from a single board to hundreds of apartments. We service the CBD and surrounds including Docklands, South Yarra and South Melbourne, and can align our schedule to an existing maintenance calendar or build the calendar for you.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How often do RCDs need testing in a commercial building?
The interval depends on the environment class under AS/NZS 3760: push-button tests run on a short cycle and timed trip tests on a longer one, and a hostile environment shortens both. We map each building or tenancy to its correct class and put every device on the right schedule, so you are neither under-tested nor paying for testing you do not need.
What is the difference between RCD testing and test and tag?
RCD testing covers the safety switches protecting circuits at the switchboard. Test and tag covers plug-in appliances and leads. They are separate obligations with separate registers, and we typically deliver both in one visit under one report.
Does thermal imaging mean shutting the power down?
No. Thermographic scanning is done on a live board under normal load, which is exactly when a failing connection shows itself. There is no interruption to the building.
What do we receive after testing?
A per-device register with results, locations and next-due dates, plus a findings summary with any recommended repairs. The records are formatted to feed Owners Corporation audits, insurer requests and Essential Safety Measures reporting.
